Alterations & Care

GETTING ALTERATIONS

Alterations are an expected part of the bridal journey, but with fabric as delicate as velvet with devoré, extra care is essential. While we do not provide in-house alteration services, we provide detailed guidance to help ensure your gown remains in pristine condition.

  • Special Handling for Velvet & Devoré: Steaming is the preferred method for refreshing and restoring the fabric’s natural drape. However, ironing or pressing firmly should be avoided, as this can crush the pile and leave permanent marks. If ironing is absolutely necessary, a small piece of matching velvet will be included with your gown. This fabric should always be placed pile to pile with the gown, acting as a protective buffer to prevent flattening or distortion of the texture.

  • Structural Considerations: Taking in a gown is generally easier and less invasive than letting it out. While it is possible to let out seams, velvet fabrics are prone to imprinting — meaning stitch lines, needle marks, or seam impressions may remain visible even after the fabric has been resewn. For this reason, we recommend ordering the gown as close to your true size as possible, then tailoring inward as needed for the final fit.

  • Trusted Specialists: Always work with experienced bridal or couture alteration specialists who understand luxury fabrics. They should handle the gown minimally, use steaming over pressing, and take care to preserve the natural drape and sheen of the material.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR GOWN

Each gown from Trotter Bridal & Atelier is crafted with the intention of becoming an heirloom. To preserve its beauty for years to come, proper care is essential:

  • Velvet & Devoré: These fabrics are delicate and should never be exposed to direct heat or steam, which can permanently crush or distort the pile. Avoid aggressive pressing; instead, use light steaming from a distance or professional care. Always store in a breathable garment bag—never plastic—to allow the fabric to breathe and prevent moisture build-up.

  • Silk Charmeuse: This fabric requires professional dry cleaning only. Choose a trusted cleaner who specializes in bridal or couture garments to ensure its lustrous finish remains intact.

  • Storage & Handling: Hang your gown from the interior loops sewn inside the garment, not from the straps, to protect its structure and prevent stretching. Keep your gown in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to avoid fading or fabric damage over time. For long-term storage, placing your gown into a professional preservation box will best protect its appearance, keeping it safeguarded for years to come.

For those wishing to invest in long-term preservation, we recommend:

Both companies provide museum-grade preservation boxes and breathable garment bags to ensure your gown remains as timeless as the story it was created to tell.
